Meet the J. G. Kellogg.  Currently buried in the sands and mud of the Sacramento River near the Deschutes Road bridge in Anderson.

Attempts are being made to locate her.  She was "discovered" in 1970 by scuba divers employed by the company who built the present automobile bridge.  And left buried in the riverbed.  We are now attempting to rediscover and document its location. 

Locomotive factsheet:

• Built in 1866 for the San Francisco & Alameda Railroad.  Rebuilt in the Central Pacific railroad shops in 1872 and resold.
• Purchased by the J. E. Terry Lumber Company of Bella Vista in the mid-1890s.
• Named for J. G. ellogg, a Gold Rush millionaire who lived in San Francisco.
• The Kellogg pulled train loads of cut lumber from the milll at Bella Vista to the main line at Anderson where it was transferred to other cars and shipped to its customers.
• The company railroad tracks followed much of today's path of Deschutes Road.
• During the 1890s, two different locomotives fell off a ferry in separate years while being transported across the Sacramento River.
• The first locomotive was pulled out.  It was NOT the Kellogg.
• The Kellogg was the replacement locomotive.  When it fell in, it was left there.
• The State of California is claiming ownership because it lies in the riverbed which is state property.
• Researchers believe it is the second oldest remaining locomotive in California.
• Dottie Smith has organized the latest search.
• The search mission is only to locate the locomotive.
• What happens after the locomotive is found is unknown at this time.
• To date, four eye witnesses have pinpointed its location.
• When the river conditions are right (clear), the water is low, and the needed hi-tech equipment is acquired, another search will be made.

That's the ferry carrying the first locomotive across the river that fell in.  The J. G. Kellogg was also carried across the river on this ferry.  When it fell in, it was left in the river.
